Niu Valley Visual Art Student Accolades

At the 22nd Annual MOA Museum of Art awards ceremony this past weekend, the following Lancer Artists were awarded for their fine work: Ana Alumbaugh, Hailey Pandolfe, Kamuela Peck, and Stepheny Young. The theme was “Beauty Through the Eyes of our Children.” Their work will be displayed at Kahala Mall through June 2nd, then moved to the Honolulu Academy of Arts at Linekona from June 5-12.

Student Eryn Iwanaga took honors at the Mayor’s Memorial Day Poster Contest. Her work is currently on display at the Honolulu Hale’s 3rd floor. Eryn’s artwork memoralized our fallen heroes.

But wait, Lancer Artists were not done!  Student Christian Young placed 2nd amongst Hawaii entrants in the 2010 International Aviation Art Contest. Christian will be awarded at the Honolulu International Airport next Monday.

Congratulations, students, for representing our school so well in these competitions. We are proud of your efforts and accomplishments.

Consolidation Study Underway for Kaiser Complex Elementary Schools

As directed by the Hawaii Legislature through the Board of Education, consolidation studies are being conducted across the state. Three elementary schools in our Kaiser Complex are included in this study because they meet one of three conditions, or because they can host the consolidated school. BE ADVISED, this is a STUDY, and NOT A DECISION. The process: The Kaiser Complex study will be forwarded in June to the Superintendent and BOE for public hearing. Hearings will be conducted in the fall of 2010, followed by a recommendation by the Superintendent and decision by the BOE in November 2010.  Should there be a decision to consolidate, the implementation will be in School Year 2011-12.

Attached is a letter signed by all principals of the Kaiser Complex. We stand united to support each other. There may be a negative impact on enrollment and erode community support on all schools should this happen.  Since we at Niu Valley Middle are maximizing opportunities to “go green,” this letter will not be distributed via hard copy unless requested to our PCNC.

Earth Day at Niu Valley Middle School

Today culminates a week-long emphasis on our theme, “Reuse.” An Earth Day door decorating contest is being held. Grade 8 Team E organized this event along with our Student Activities Coordinator/Student Government.

They have been posting daily “Earth Day” questions that caused us to reflect on our own practices, all consistent with the IB Learner Profile, and IB Areas of Interaction: Community/Service, Environments, and Health/Social Education.  Sample questions that were posed:

• How long does glass take to decompose in a landfill? Answer:  One million years!

• How long does it take for an aluminum can to break down?  500 years!

• Did you know 38 million plastic bottles from bottled water go to the landfill each year and the average American consumes 167 bottles of water a year?  Reuse instead.

Reusing plastic bottles helps the Earth because if you recycle plastic, there’s a chance the next person who gets the recycled plastic product might throw it away.

Encourage everyone to reuse paper.  Print on both sides of the paper or use the back of your paper before recycling it.  Another way to recycle paper is to use old newspaper and other used paper for art and craft projects.  By reusing paper you reduce the amount of trees cut down every year to create new paper.  Take steps to make this a practice: Reduce, reuse, recycle, and repair!
