Owner of Black SUV, NGB 973: HPD On the Way
Report has been filed with HPD. Your plates have been entered through the HPD database. HPD is now on the way to speak to the owner. Why contribute to the delinquency of a minor? Why encourage them to break laws? Book 'um, Danno!January 28, 2012 | Mr. Justin Mew |
Posse: Black SUV, Hawaii Plates NGB 973 and Skateboarders
My staff and I just witnessed three male skateboarders load into this vehicle. The skateboarders were warned to leave campus or be arrested for trespassing (HRS Ch 708-813 and 814). They did not leave, so HPD was called. Before the police could get here, a black SUV drove up to campus, the boys got in and left. The license plate: Hawaii, #NGB 973. I will be filing a report with HPD. Typically, after we chase away the skateboarders, we find graffiti, damaged rails, benches, and illicit things. If you see this vehicle roaming your neighborhood or other school, be wary. Help us Protect This House!January 28, 2012 | Mr. Justin Mew |

Sprouting Up As the Year Turns
As students returned to school from the Winter Recess, I noticed that many of them grew taller, and look more matured. If there was any doubt about students remaining in an elementary school setting--it is not the case! Student learning as evidenced in report cards science fair projects... outward appearances as well. Nature was at work as well: the grass sprouted as well. With the state workers on STO (similar to a furlough), our early January grass cutting cycle was missed. Fortunately, our crew is back this week!January 23, 2012 | Mr. Justin Mew |
Red and Yellow Across Cultures
As the new lunar year is marked today, the colors of red and yellow are seen. The Chinese traditionally view red as the symbolic color for good health. Yellow is considered as the purest of all colors and symbolizes wealth. Hence, the greeting, Gong Xi Fa Cai: congratulations and prosperity. In the Hawaiian Culture, the colors red and yellow are colors of the alii or royalty. One would think that Niu Valley Alumni are showing their colors proudly--red and yellow are also our school colors!January 23, 2012 | Mr. Justin Mew |
Why Not Kung Hei (Hey) Fat Choi?
Most of the ethnic Chinese growing up in Hawaii since the 1920's can trace their roots to Canton, China. Hence, the Cantonese Pinyin is "Kung Hei Fat Choi." Canton is the English name for Guangzhou province. Cantonese was considered as a prestige dialect of Chinese. However, in China's efforts to unite the country under one language, Mandarin was named as the proper dialect.January 23, 2012 | Mr. Justin Mew |
Xin Nian Kuai Le
Happy (Lunar) New Year! That was the Pinyin in Mandarin. Today marks the Year of the Water Dragon, according to ancient Chinese. There are five dragons (Water, Wood, Fire, and Metal [gold]). In 2024, it will be the Year of the Wood Dragon. Culturally, at this time of the Lunar New Year, Chinese greet others by saying, "Congratulations and Prosperity!"
