Business Office Retrofitting Not Complete. Patience, Please

The Private Contractor has not completed retrofitting work to remove architectural barriers and meet new ADA requirements. General business office functions have moved back. However, the following office functions remain in the Library: Registrar, Vice Principal, PCNC, Health Room. There is no water or restrooms in the business office. We will continue to service the public.

Kokua/Policy for Drop Off and Pick Up

Recommended drop off and pick up is on Kanau Street. It is less congested, and there is more curb area. If you use Halemaumau Street, be mindful of the bus area. Pull over completely to the side so your vehicle tail does not extend into the through traffic. Our parking lots are NOT DESIGNED FOR DROP-OFF/PICK UP. You may enter after 8:00 a.m. for school business. EXCEPTION: If your disabled child needs drop-off/pick-up on campus, this is allowed.

Today is Mr. Suga's last day. He has served as our Account Clerk since 1996--15 years! We appreciate the work he has done to maintain our "books," as well as a multitude of office functions. On behalf of Superintendent Matayoshi, and the thousands of students, parents and community who have graced our halls, Mahalo and Aloha, Mr. Suga! Enjoy life from another perspective. Retrofitting Not Complete. Administrative Office Functions in Library Today

Work on our Administration Building will continue for another 3 months. Architectural Barrier Removal efforts uncovered issues needing work order changes. We will continue to service the public from the Library today. On Monday, August 1st, general Administrative Office functions will be moved back . The Health Room will be set up in the rear of the Library. Vice Principal desks will likewise remain. The Office of the Principal will move back over the weekend. Thank you all for your patience and understanding with us.

New School Bus Fares

The Board of Education raised the school bus fares to take effect on August 1, 2011. The fares are: Annual round trip = $270.00; Annual one-way = $135.00; Qtrly round trip = $72.00; Qtrly one way = $36.00; Coupons = 1.25 per ride or 1sheet = $12.50. Checks should be made to: The DOE.

“I Did Not Find Anything Significant Enough for Mom”

The concept of bringing back "omiyage" has transcended the Japanese culture, and became "local-style." On our first excursion to a mall, I asked Bass Clarinetist Aaron if he got anything for his mother. His reply made me so proud of him. All students put a lot of thought into their omiyage; I was witness to many thought processes of our students. Parents, you've done a masterful job with your child(ren). They were a joy to be with 24/7. Know that the tremendous pocketbook hit you made for this trip was well-spent.

Pike’s Peak or Bust: Colorado’s Gold Rush Motto

Nicknamed "The Centennial State" because Colorado became a state 100 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed, there was a gold rush. Gold nuggets were found in the Rocky Mountain Range of Colorado. Witness the nickname of their pro basketball team, the Denver Nuggets. How about their pro baseball team, the Colorado Rockies? Katherine Lee Bates' inspiration to write "America the Beautiful" at the summit of Pike's Peak is commemorated with a plaque in her honor. French Hornist Alicia presented me with a commemorative penny of the summit. She knew that duty called me to help her classmate, which kept us back in Denver. Mahalo, Alicia! There is value added as now this coin is an "error" coin because Pike's Peak has risen 5 feet higher! The coin says 14, 110 feet.

For Purple Mountain Majesties

The summit of Pike's Peak is about 300 feet higher than our Mauna Kea. That is a football field stood upright. We reached the summit and soaked in the beauty of our great country. Another example of IB MYPArea of Interaction:Environments-- Science, Language Arts and Fine Arts: It was breathtaking, not only literally, but figuratively and emotionally. In 1895, Katherine Lee Bates was so inspired that she penned a poem about Pike's Peak, then later renamed it, "America the Beautiful." Composer Samuel A. Ward put the lyrics to tune.

Moving through Terrestrial Ecosystems

We traveled by the world's highest Cog Railway up to the summit of Pike's Peak, altitude 14, 115 feet above sea level. Along the way, students experienced four different vegetative zones.They saw the Eastern Plain Zone from the lookout at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Then, on the cog: Foothill Zone, Montaire Zone, Subalpine Zone, and finally, the Alpine Zone. What a wonderful way to experience the Life and Earth Sciences.
