NVMS Band Plays Kenyan Counting Song, Dr. Akombo Leads a Dance

February 20, 2012 | Mr. Justin Mew |

To demonstrate the African belief of oneness in music and dance, Dr. Akombo first asked the audience what they thought Africans did for sustenance. When the audience was shy to respond, our IB Risk Takers offered, "farming" and "milking a cow!" So movement education was used to show digging and milking. NVMS's Mr. Wayne Fanning was then asked to lead our band in the counting song, "Moja Mbili Tatu" with Dr. Akombo leading a "line dance" of farming and milking motions with sound effects around the room. This reminded me about Team A's Bon Dance. Great fun.
