Welcome!
Welcome, Youkoso, Huan ying, and Aloha!
Situated within the Niu Valley neighborhood, we service the East Honolulu Communities of Kalama Valley, Hawaii Kai, Kuliouou, Niu Valley, Aina Haina and Waialae Iki. Students also hail from all administrative districts on Oahu. We implement with fidelity, the National Middle School philosophy, with students in Grades 6 through 8. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges issued a three-year accreditation to 2010.
Our relentless pursuit is to earn authorization as Hawaii’s first public middle school to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP). The IB authorization process is a minimum three-year effort; we are in the third year and poised to host an authorization visit in the Fall of 2009. Our school’s vision and mission was changed last year to reflect our school’s new direction for our students: intercultural awareness, holistic education, and communication. These are the fundamental concepts of the International Baccalaureate. We also adopted a new logo which honors our host culture while including the medieval Lancer, our school mascot.
Our entire school is implementing the IB MYP as an IB Candidate School. In keeping with the spirit and intent of the IB at the middle years, all students are enrolled into the eight program IB MYP program areas. Language B (World Language) offerings are the critical languages Japanese and Chinese. Both the IB and the United State Department of Education consider these languages as critical modern languages.
Niu Valley Middle School (niu = coconut in Hawaiian) was established in 1955 and celebrated its 50th Anniversary in the 2005-2006 school year. We are now in our second fifty years and delivering a rigorous program of study for our students that will be accepted and recognized anywhere in the world.
I appreciate you visiting our school’s website and hope to meet you in person someday.
Thank you, Domo arigato, Xie xie and Mahalo nui loa,
Justin S. N. Mew
Principal/Head of School
