Sponsored by the University of Hawaii Center for Chinese Studies' Confucius Institute, we are being treated to cultural performances. International-mindedness in action, these performing artists are in their ethnic clothing. There are 56 ethnic groups in China. Mahalo nui, Xie xie, and Thank You to the Confucius Institute for selecting Niu Valley Middle as one of two school performance sites for the Yunan Provencial Nationalities Academy of Arts.

In response to a disturbing national trend on Facebook called, "Confessions Pages," Superintendent Matayoshi is sending letters home to parents of all public school students statewide. A copy of this letter can be downloaded from our website. The hardcopy version will be distributed in next Wednesday's Communications Envelope. Parents and Legal Guardians, you are being asked to engage in a discussion with your child on GLO #6: "Effective and Ethical User of Technology." Students, learn and live the IB Learner Profile. The appropriate traits: Principled, Caring, Thinkers, Knowledgable, and Reflective.

This morning, a student suffered a medical condition while in class. Student's medical emergency plan was followed.. Staff responded immediately, and classmates moved to counselor's office. Emergency Medical System was activated, with the ambulance and fire department responding in minutes. Parent came to school, and, when it was determined that the medical emergency was passed, took her child for follow-up evaluation. Thank you all for responding in a manner so as to allow responders to do their job in caring for the child. Our school has returned to normal. Education continues. Student is under care.

Happy Valentine's Day! So as not to commercialize this day, I will use this day to encourage you to take measures to maintain and strengthen your heart physically, emotionally and spiritually. If you are in a position to do so, model this for others, and take the lead to do the same for those under your care. This is a Principal's "Jedi Wisdom" to support the Vulcan wish, "Live Long and Prosper!"

At Kiluea Gym today, our NVMS Lady Lancer Basketball team beat Anuenue, 27-21. They continue with their winning ways by playing scrappy offense and defense. Mahalo to the Niu Valley Middle Cheer Squad for supporting the Lady Lancers. Meanwhile, our NVMS Boys Lancer Basketball Gold squad could not capitalize on the last possession with twelve seconds in the game, falling to Kawananakoa Middle School, 30-31. The boys represented our school with dignity in defeat.
