To the half dozen or so Grade 7 parents, we apologize that you came to school tonight only to find a hula halau practicing, and Music Department parents meeting. You should have been notified that the meeting was moved to tomorrow, September 25. Pono Choices is a health curriculum developed by the University of Hawaii at Manoa through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The program meets state and national standards for Health education. A letter was sent home to all parents of Mr. Nagata's Grade 7 PE classes.

Mrs. Mew and I were assigned to the table up front that was sponsored by McDonald's Restaurants of Hawaii. Many of the faces in the room were recognizable not because of a personal connection, but because they were recognizable newsmakers. Imagine sitting next on the same table as local athletic star and businessman Peter Kim! Sandy Brodie! O'Toole's Bill Comerford! NVMS parent Debi Halcro saved the evening by sitting across from us, making connections, and giving historical perspectives. Lo and Behold, Debi is a force in the business world herself as President of The Valenti Print Group and Foundation board member.

The 2012 Fam Jam showcased Niu Valley Middle School's talented students. We saw our World-ranked Percussion Ensemble. We rocked with Grade 7 students, The Wreck. We were wowed by Team B's Aiden Laprete-Powell singing with his ukelele. It was no wonder why his performances went viral! Aiden, whose stage name is Aiden James, will be one of the opening acts leading to the Hawaii Five-O Season 3 World Premier this Sunday, Sept. 23 at Sunset on the Beach at Waikiki! Come down to cheer on our very own Aiden, and the cast of Hawaii Five-O!

Clad in their yellow and purple vests, the Koko Head Lion's Club sent a team of Lions using their skills, know-how, and can-do spirit. The Friends of Niu Valley's Paul Bernstein had a group constructing plantar boxes around the NFL trees, repairing the rusting walkway covers, and guiding efforts. One Lion, Stan, asked to repair the outdoor table/benches that were rendered not economically repairable by skateboarders, vandals, and the misguided. Lion Stan went home to get his pneumatic jack, 2x4's and returned to deftly repair each bench and table. He is in his early 80's, with a burning passion to pass on his skills to the younger generation. Within two hours, he made usable those tables/benches that were out of commission for over two years! Mahalo nui, Koko Head Lion President Gavin Ball, Liaisons Lion Dr. Chin-Chance and Liaison Phil Sharp and team from a grateful school!
