By Mr. Justin Mew on March 28, 2014
At the Hawaii State Capitol Rotunda today, between numbers being played by the Niu Valley Middle School Band, Governor Neil Abercrombie surprised the students, teachers, chaperones and audience by taking the microphone to declare March 28, 2014 as "Niu Valley Middle School Band Day" in Hawaii. Students were stunned in disbelief as the Governor himself spoke to them in person and made the proclamation. Governor asked "all citizens of the Aloha State to join us in recognizing the continuing excellence of Niu Valley Middle School's Band and Music Department, and celebrating their unprecedented representation of Hawaii at the July 2014 American School Band Director's Association 60th National Conference." It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and memorable experience in playing for the Governor and having him proclaim this day for us. Congratulations, band students, Mr. Fanning, Mr. Morita and Mr. Miyashiro! You've done our school and community proud! Thank you for bringing the highest honor to Lancer Country. Thank you Niu Valley Middle School alumni who were a part of the building process, which led to today's historical proclamation.
